What we’re doing

As nursing students and future nurses, we hope to break down stereotypes and challenge the dominant perspectives to affect language that is more inclusive. Through modelling and actively practicing using validating, inclusive, and positive language, we hope to change our implicit behaviour, promote positive therapeutic communication, and be aware of how we make our patients feel.

Why it matters

Language has the ability to include and exclude. Through recognition, reflection, and active change we want to ensure our practice is consistent with social inclusivity and reflect on the responsibility inherent in our ability to impact peoples’ lives with our words.

Where do we begin?

There is ample evidence from published studies that language use and its evolution is an important means to rectify embedded stereotypes or implicit categorizations and hierarchies (Sczesny, 2015). One of the first instances of language awareness and rectification comes from scientific writing, with the understanding that historically under identified or marginalized groups were left unrepresented (Hall, 2015). With evolution of acceptable language and its adoption in more mainstream avenues, it is important to use evidence from journals, texts, and lived experiences to inform our own personal language emancipation.

Gagan Longia

Positions Running For:
Cohort Rep,
Skills Coordinator,
Social Coordinator
Statement:
I’m super excited for this program and getting to know all of you closely as we endure through midterms, assignments, and coffee-induced all-nighters! I love meeting new people, bingeing Netflix series in one sitting, puns, and trying new food! I’m really looking forward to being a part of 2NA and working closely with the 2nd entry program. I would like for this program to progress as smoothly as possible for everyone. I would ensure that everyone is represented and is able to voice their questions and concerns. If any issues arise, I would like to create a safe environment where the issues can be voiced, and we can work to resolve them collectively. Over the next two years, I hope that we can really be there for each other as a group, and become a close-knit family!

Positions Running For:
Social Events Co-ordinator

Statement: Through my prior education and volunteering experiences, I am known to be dedicated, open-minded, a team player and a leader when it comes to organizing and planning events and making sure the vision comes to life. My hobbies include baking and cooking, dancing and volleyball.

If appointed as Social Event Coordinator, my main goal will be to have our cohort come closer together to have a good time and escape from reality for a bit. The ideas I have in store for events range from high activity (“Amazing Race: YorkU”) to relaxed (Paint/Games Night) and will be made sure they are suitable for everyone! This year is going to be challenging for us but the way we spend our time together will depend on you! Your opinions and ideas matter to me, so if you have ideas or events in mind, your idea might just be the next event!
